How it is worked out
- 1Stamp duty is charged in slices. Each portion of the price is taxed at the rate for its band.
- 2First-time buyers pay nothing up to £300,000 and 5% on the part up to £500,000. Above £500,000 the relief does not apply.
- 3Additional homes pay 5 percentage points more in every band, and buyers who are not UK resident pay a further 2 points.
Worth knowing
- Scotland uses Land and Buildings Transaction Tax and Wales uses Land Transaction Tax.
- Your solicitor files the return and pays the tax, usually within 14 days of completion.
