About us

Free, independent pay tools for people who work in the NHS, built to answer the questions payslips leave open.

Why this site exists

NHS pay is more complicated than most jobs. Your salary depends on your band and pay point, then unsocial hours, overtime, high cost area supplements, pension tiers, student loans and salary sacrifice schemes all change what reaches your bank account. The official documents explain the rules, but they rarely show you what the rules mean for your own payslip.

NHS Pay Calculator was set up to close that gap. Each calculator takes one question that NHS staff ask often, such as "what will I take home on Band 6?" or "how much maternity pay will I get?", and works it through step by step using the published rules and rates.

What you will find here

  • 57 free calculators covering take-home pay, unsocial hours, overtime, annual leave, sick pay, maternity and paternity pay, pensions, London weighting, mileage, mortgages and more. You can see them all on the calculators page.
  • 145 plain-English guides that explain the rules behind each calculator with worked examples. Browse them in our guides.
  • Figures for the 2026/27 tax year and Agenda for Change pay scales in England, updated when new pay awards and tax rates are confirmed.

There is no sign-up and no paywall. The calculators run in your own browser, so the numbers you type in are not sent to us.

Who runs the site

NHS Pay Calculator is an independent website. It is not run by, funded by or connected to the NHS, NHS England, NHS Employers, NHS Pensions, the Department of Health and Social Care or any trade union. We are a small independent publisher with an interest in making public sector pay easier to understand.

How we keep the numbers right

Every calculator is built from official sources: NHS Employers pay circulars and the Agenda for Change handbook, HMRC rates and thresholds, NHS Business Services Authority pension guidance, and GOV.UK guidance on statutory pay. When the rules change, usually each April, the figures are updated and the guides are reviewed.

You can read the full process, including how corrections work, in our editorial policy.

How the site is funded

The site is free to use and is paid for by advertising. Advertisers have no say over what we write, which calculators we build or how results are worked out. Adverts are always kept separate from calculator results so they cannot be mistaken for them. See our privacy policy for how advertising cookies work and how to control them.

Important to know

Results are estimates to help you plan. They are not financial, tax, legal or pension advice, and your employer's payroll team, your payslip and NHS Pensions always have the final word. Our disclaimer explains this in more detail.
