Who can use this salary calculator?
Anyone in the UK paid by the hour or by the shift can work out their weekly or monthly take-home pay here, including:
- Care workers and home carers on an hourly rate with a NEST or workplace pension
- Healthcare assistants and support workers on Agenda for Change Bands 2 to 4
- NHS nurses and midwives on Bands 5 to 7, including long days and nights. Find your NHS hourly rate
- Doctors, from resident doctors to consultants. Resident doctor pay
- Bank and agency staff with a BR code on a second job. Second job tax
- Paramedics, ODPs, AHPs and admin staff on any NHS band, in England, Scotland or Wales
Quick tips to check your payslip
- Most people with one job have tax code 1257L. If yours is different, the tax code checker explains it.
- Paid more for nights, weekends or bank holidays? Use your enhanced hourly rate, or the shift pay calculator.
- Overtime is not usually pensionable for full-time NHS staff, so less pension comes off it than shown here. See your overtime take-home pay.
- Compare your result with your payslip. A big gap usually means a different tax code or an emergency code.
How it is worked out
- 1Step 1: choose your pay period, your usual hours on a working day and your usual days off. Every day in the period is filled in for you.
- 2Then change any day to worked or off in the timesheet, and type the exact hours, such as a 14.5-hour double shift. Gross pay for each day is hours × hourly rate.
- 3Step 2: enter your hourly rate and how often you are paid. Step 3: add your tax code, pension and any student loan.
- 4Income tax uses your tax code on the whole period as one payslip, including BR, D0, D1, 0T, NT, K codes and Scottish (S) and Welsh (C) codes. National Insurance and student loan use the matching payslip thresholds.
- 5NHS Pension uses the 2026/27 member tiers and comes off before tax. Workplace pensions such as NEST take 5% of pay between £6,240 and £50,270 a year, paid as 4% from you plus 1% tax relief.
Worth knowing
- Made for everyone paid by the hour or the shift: care workers and home carers, support workers, healthcare assistants, nurses on any Agenda for Change band, midwives, doctors and bank or agency staff.
- Totals are split by calendar month, so a period that crosses two months shows both.
- Your timesheet is saved in this browser only, so you can come back and add days as you go. Download it as a CSV file for Excel or Google Sheets.
- Extra rates such as unsocial hours, overtime or sleep-ins are not added automatically. Enter your enhanced hourly rate, or use the shift pay calculator.
Common questions
Can care workers use this salary calculator?+
Yes. Care workers, home carers and support workers can enter their hourly rate, shifts, tax code and workplace pension such as NEST to see their take-home pay.
How do I work out my gross pay from my hours?+
Multiply the hours you worked by your hourly rate. 186 hours at £21 an hour is £3,906 before deductions.
How much tax do I pay on £3,906 a month?+
With tax code 1257L, about £495 income tax and £229 National Insurance, and £383 more if you pay into the NHS Pension. That leaves about £2,799 take-home pay.
What does tax code BR mean on a second job?+
BR means all your pay from that job is taxed at 20%, with no tax-free allowance. It is common for bank shifts or a second care job.
What is my NHS hourly rate?+
Divide your yearly salary by 52.143 weeks of 37.5 hours. Band 5 entry pay of £32,073 is about £16.40 an hour.
