Assumes full-time hours, so the overtime is not pensionable. Spread evenly across the year.
How it is worked out
- 1Overtime is added on top of your yearly salary, so it is taxed at your highest rate of tax.
- 2We compare your take-home pay with and without the overtime. The difference is what you keep.
- 3Overtime for full-time staff is not pensionable, so no pension contribution is taken from it.
Worth knowing
- Part-time staff working extra hours up to 37.5 a week are paid plain time, and those hours are pensionable.
- A month with a lot of overtime can push part of it into a higher tax band for that month. It usually evens out over the year.
Common questions
Is NHS overtime taxed more than normal pay?+
No. It is taxed at the same rates as the rest of your pay. It can feel higher because it sits on top of your salary, in your highest tax band.
