Clinical psychology is one of the few professions where the NHS pays you a salary while you complete a doctorate. The road is long and competitive, but the pay ladder is well defined. This guide follows it from the first assistant post to consultant level.

Assistant psychologist: Band 4 or 5

Most people gain experience as an assistant psychologist before applying for clinical training. These posts are usually on Band 4 or Band 5:

BandSalary rangeTake-home at entry
Band 4£28,392 to £31,157£1,874
Band 5£32,073 to £39,043£2,040

Take-home is per month, full time, with the NHS Pension and tax code 1257L. Assistant psychologist posts are often fixed term, and many people hold more than one before getting a training place.

Trainee clinical psychologist: Band 6

Trainees on Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy) programmes in England are employed by the NHS and paid on Band 6, normally at the entry point, for the three years of training. Course fees are funded, so trainees do not pay tuition.

SalaryTake-home per month
Band 6 entry£39,959£2,430

Many trainees have a Plan 2 undergraduate loan and a postgraduate loan from a master's degree. Together they would reduce take-home on Band 6 entry by about £174 a month: £79 for Plan 2 and £95 for the postgraduate loan. The student loan calculator works out both.

Qualified clinical psychologist: Band 7

Newly qualified clinical psychologists are usually appointed on Band 7:

Band 7 stepSalaryTake-home per month
Entry£49,387£2,934
After 2 years£51,932£3,078
After 5 years£56,515£3,309

You must be registered with the HCPC as a practitioner psychologist to practise.

Band 8a and above

Many clinical psychologists move to Band 8a within a few years of qualifying, as a senior or principal psychologist with more autonomy and supervisory responsibility:

BandTypical roleSalary range
Band 8asenior clinical psychologist£57,528 to £64,750
Band 8bprincipal or lead psychologist£66,582 to £77,368
Band 8cconsultant clinical psychologist£79,504 to £91,609
Band 8d and 9head of psychology or psychological servicesfrom £94,356

Other psychology roles in the NHS

  • Psychological wellbeing practitioners (PWPs) in NHS Talking Therapies: trainees are usually on Band 4, and qualified PWPs on Band 5.
  • High intensity therapists delivering CBT: usually Band 6 in training and Band 7 once qualified.
  • Counselling and health psychologists follow similar banding to clinical psychologists once qualified.

Is the trainee salary pensionable?

Yes. Trainees are NHS employees, contribute to the NHS Pension at 9.8% on Band 6, and build three years of pension during training. They also get NHS annual leave, sick pay and maternity pay.

Thinking about private practice

Some qualified psychologists add private work alongside an NHS post. Private income is taxed through self-assessment, and the tax on it depends on your total income. If your NHS salary is near the higher rate threshold, much of your private income may be taxed at 40%.

Common questions

Do trainees have to work for the NHS after qualifying? Arrangements vary between programmes. Check the terms of your training contract.

Is London weighting paid to trainees? Yes, if your base is in a high cost area.

How competitive is training? Very. Most applicants hold assistant or research posts for several years first.

Training in London

Many DClinPsy programmes are based in or around London, where trainees receive the high cost area supplement on top of Band 6 pay. In Inner London that is 20% of basic salary, within a minimum and maximum. For a trainee on Band 6 entry:

  • Basic salary: £39,959
  • Inner London supplement: £7,992
  • Total: £47,951 a year

In Outer London the supplement is 15%, and in the fringe zone 5%. The supplement is pensionable, so it also adds to the pension you build during training. The London weighting calculator works out each zone.
