How to Change Your Address on the NHS App (Step by Step)
You can update your home address in the NHS App from your profile. Here are the steps, what to do if it does not work, and what else to update when you move.

You can change your home address in the NHS App by going to Profile, then Contact details, then Home address. If the option is not available, contact your GP surgery and they can update it for you. If you have moved to a new area, you may also need to register with a new GP surgery.
Steps to update your home address
According to the NHS App help pages, from the home screen of the app:
- Select Profile.
- Select Contact details.
- Select Home address to view or change it.
You can do the same thing by logging in to your NHS account on the NHS website in a web browser.
Your address is part of your record with your GP surgery, so keeping it up to date means letters about appointments, screening and test results reach you.
If you cannot change your address in the app
Some people will not see the option, or the change will not save. The NHS App help pages say that if you cannot change your home address in the app, you should contact your GP surgery. You can usually do this by phone, through the surgery's online form or at reception.
You also cannot use the app to change the address of someone you help through family and carer access, such as a child or an older relative. Their GP surgery will need to update it.
Changing your email address or phone number
Your contact email and mobile number are separate from your home address. To change them, go to Profile and then the contact details section, where you can update the email address and phone number the NHS uses to contact you.
The NHS App help on contact details points out that these are separate from the email and phone number you use to log in. Changing one does not change the other, so if you have a new phone, update both.
To change your name or other personal details, contact your GP surgery.
Do you need to change GP surgery when you move?
Not always. If you have moved within the same area and your surgery still covers your new address, you can stay registered and just update your address.
If you have moved further away, your surgery may no longer cover your new address. Most people need to register near where they live, although some surgeries accept patients from further away. The NHS website's GP registration page explains your options.
Changing GP surgery in the NHS App
You can register with a new surgery in the app:
- Select Profile.
- Select Your GP surgery.
- Select Change GP surgery.
- Enter your postcode and select Search.
- Choose Register online with this GP next to the surgery you want.
The NHS App help page on changing GP says the registration questions take about 15 minutes. You do not need to tell your old surgery; it is told automatically once you are registered with the new one. You should usually hear within 5 days of the new surgery getting your details.
Other NHS services to tell about your move
Updating your GP record is the main step, but it is worth checking a few other services yourself:
- Hospital appointments: if you are on a waiting list or have upcoming appointments, check the hospital has your new address, especially if you have moved a long way.
- Your dentist: dental practices keep their own patient records, so tell them separately.
- Your pharmacy: if you have moved away from your chosen pharmacy, you can choose a new one in the NHS App under Prescriptions.
- Prescription exemption or prepayment certificates: these are managed by the NHS Business Services Authority, so update your details with them if you have one.
Moving to a different part of the UK
The NHS App is for people registered with a GP surgery in England. If you move to Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, register with a GP there. Health services in each nation are run separately and may use different apps and online services.
Keeping your account secure after a move
Moving house is a common time for post to go astray. If you are worried that NHS letters have gone to your old address, ask your GP surgery to check your record. Never share your NHS login security codes with anyone, even if they say they are from the NHS.
Your login details are separate
The email address and phone number you use to log in to the NHS App are part of your NHS login, not your GP record. If you change your phone number or email, update them in your login settings as well as your contact details. Otherwise you may not receive security codes when you next log in.
Moving with children or someone you care for
If you manage health services for a child or another adult through family and carer access, you cannot change their address in the app. Ask their GP surgery to update it, and register them with a new surgery if needed. Children under 16 are usually registered by a parent or guardian on a separate form.
Quick answers about NHS addresses
Will changing my address in the NHS App update it everywhere?
It updates your details held by the NHS for your GP record. Some services, such as dentists, keep separate records, so tell them too.
Can I change my address before I move?
It is best to update it once you have moved, so letters do not go to the new address before you are living there. If you need to register with a new GP, you will usually do that after the move.
Can I change my child's address in the app?
No. Ask your child's GP surgery to update their address.
