In NHS hospitals they dispense and check medicines, manage stock, support patients on wards and increasingly take on clinical roles. Pay follows Agenda for Change.

How to become a pharmacy technician
To register with the GPhC, you need to complete approved training that combines a qualification with supervised work experience, usually over two years. In NHS hospitals this is typically a trainee pharmacy technician post, often run as an apprenticeship, so you are paid while you train and do not pay course fees.
Band 4 or Band 5 after registration?
Newly registered technicians are often on Band 4, moving to Band 5 when they take on additional responsibilities, such as:
- accuracy checking, where a qualified technician carries out the final accuracy check of dispensed medicines
- medicines management on wards, including medicines reconciliation and patient counselling
- supervising other staff or leading a section
Some trusts appoint newly registered technicians directly on Band 5. If you are applying for a first registered post, compare the bands offered by different trusts in your area.
Weekend and late services
Many hospital pharmacies run seven days a week. Weekend and evening hours are enhanced in the usual way: plus 30% for Saturdays and weekday nights after 8pm, and plus 60% for Sundays and public holidays, for Bands 4 to 7. Overtime is paid at time and a half.
Career routes after Band 5
- Specialist technician roles in areas such as aseptic services, clinical trials, education or procurement, often at Band 6
- Lead and management roles at Band 7 and 8a
- Primary care roles in GP practices and primary care networks, where pay arrangements vary
- Becoming a pharmacist, through a pharmacy degree and foundation training year

Common questions
Do pharmacy technicians revalidate? Yes. The GPhC requires annual revalidation for pharmacy professionals.
Is the trainee role paid? In NHS hospitals, yes. Trainees are employees, usually on Band 3 or 4.
Can I work in community pharmacy with the same registration? Yes, but community pharmacy employers set their own pay.
A pharmacy technician's career in numbers
A simplified example at 2026/27 rates, for a technician who registers after a two-year training post, moves to Band 5 as an accuracy checker after two years and becomes a Band 6 specialist technician after seven:
| Years | Band and step | Salary |
|---|---|---|
| Training years | Band 3 entry | £25,760 |
| Years 1 to 2 | Band 4 entry | £28,392 |
| Years 3 to 4 | Band 5 entry | £32,073 |
| Years 5 to 7 | Band 5 after 2 years | £34,592 |
| Year 8 onwards | Band 6 entry, rising to £48,117 | £39,959 |
Pay awards usually lift each figure every year, so real salaries will be higher by the time you reach each stage.
