NHS IT and Digital Jobs Salary 2026/27: Service Desk to Head of Digital
The NHS employs thousands of IT, data and digital staff on Agenda for Change. Here is how the roles are banded and what they pay.
Updated · 4 min read
Behind every electronic patient record, scan viewer and online booking system is an NHS digital team. IT, data and digital staff in NHS trusts are paid on the Agenda for Change scale, with the same pension, leave and sick pay as clinical colleagues. For many people in tech, that package is a big part of the appeal.
Typical NHS IT and digital roles by band
| Band | Salary range | Typical roles |
|---|---|---|
| Band 3 | £25,760 to £27,476 | IT service desk analyst, IT support assistant |
| Band 4 | £28,392 to £31,157 | IT support engineer, junior information analyst |
| Band 5 | £32,073 to £39,043 | desktop or infrastructure engineer, information analyst, systems trainer |
| Band 6 | £39,959 to £48,117 | senior engineer, data analyst, developer, application specialist |
| Band 7 | £49,387 to £56,515 | senior developer, cyber security specialist, data engineer, project manager |
| Band 8a | £57,528 to £64,750 | technical lead, data architect, IT service manager |
| Band 8b to 8d | £66,582 to £108,814 | head of IT, head of data, chief technology roles in some trusts |
Banding depends on the job description, so similar job titles can be on different bands in different trusts.

How NHS pay compares with private sector tech
Private sector salaries for experienced developers, data engineers and security specialists can be higher than NHS pay. When you compare, include the whole package:
- Pension. NHS employers contribute 23.7% of pensionable pay to a guaranteed, inflation-linked pension. Many private employers contribute 3% to 10% to a defined contribution pot.
- Leave. 27 days plus bank holidays to start, rising to 33 days after ten years of NHS service.
- Sick pay. Up to six months of full pay and six months of half pay after five years.
- Hybrid working. Many digital roles are hybrid, with some days on site.
- Purpose. Your work supports patient care directly.
On a Band 7 entry salary of £49,387, the employer pension contribution alone is worth about £11,700 a year.
On-call and out-of-hours support
Clinical systems need to work around the clock, so many IT teams run on-call rotas. On-call payments are agreed locally under Agenda for Change, usually as an availability payment plus pay for time worked when called out. Our on-call pay guide explains how these arrangements work.
Getting into NHS digital
- Apprenticeships in IT support, data analysis, software development and cyber security are widely available, paid while you train.
- Graduate schemes in digital and data run in some regions.
- Experienced hires can apply for posts on NHS Jobs, the main NHS recruitment site.
Clinical staff can also move into digital roles, such as clinical safety officers and clinical informatics leads, where clinical knowledge is essential.
Common questions
Can I negotiate a higher starting point? It is at the employer's discretion, but for hard-to-recruit digital posts some trusts are flexible. Agree it before you accept.
Are contractors common? Some projects use contractors, but most NHS digital work is done by employed staff.
Is overtime paid? On Bands 1 to 7, overtime is paid at time and a half. From Band 8a, overtime is not normally paid at enhanced rates.
A data analyst's career in numbers
A simplified example at 2026/27 rates, for someone who joins as a Band 5 information analyst, becomes a Band 6 data analyst after two years and a Band 7 senior analyst or data engineer after six:
| Years | Band and step | Salary |
|---|---|---|
| Years 1 to 2 | Band 5 entry | £32,073 |
| Years 3 to 4 | Band 6 entry | £39,959 |
| Years 5 to 6 | Band 6 after 2 years | £42,170 |
| Year 7 onwards | Band 7 entry, rising to £56,515 | £49,387 |
Progression in digital roles often depends on vacancies, so moving between trusts or into regional and national NHS bodies can speed things up.
