CIPD qualifications
Most HR careers in the NHS involve qualifications from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD):
- Level 3 for HR assistants and administrators
- Level 5 for HR advisors and senior advisors
- Level 7 for business partners and senior HR roles
Many trusts fund CIPD study through apprenticeships, such as the HR support and HR consultant/partner apprenticeships, so you study while working without paying fees. Senior HR posts often ask for chartered membership.
CIPD membership is on HMRC's approved list of professional bodies, so you can claim tax relief on the fee if you pay it yourself. See our tax rebate guide.
Specialist HR areas in the NHS
- Employee relations, handling disciplinary, grievance and sickness absence cases
- Recruitment and onboarding, including international recruitment
- Workforce information and ESR, managing the NHS Electronic Staff Record
- Medical staffing, supporting doctors' contracts, rotas and job planning
- Organisational development, leadership and culture work
- Equality, diversity and inclusion
Knowing Agenda for Change well is valuable in any of these areas. Advisors deal daily with questions about pay progression, unsocial hours, sick pay and leave.
Working patterns
Most HR roles are office-based or hybrid, during weekday hours, so unsocial hours payments are rare. Part-time and flexible patterns are common. Our flexible working guide explains your right to request one.
Common questions
Can I move into HR from a clinical role? Yes. Clinical experience is valued, particularly in medical staffing, workforce planning and employee relations.
Is overtime paid in HR? On Bands 1 to 7, yes, at time and a half. From Band 8a, extra hours are not normally paid at enhanced rates.
Do HR advisors need a degree? Not always. Experience plus CIPD Level 5 is a common route.
An HR career in numbers
A simplified example at 2026/27 rates, for someone who starts as a Band 3 HR assistant, completes CIPD Level 5 and becomes a Band 5 HR advisor after three years, then a Band 7 HR business partner after nine:
| Years | Band and step | Salary |
|---|---|---|
| Years 1 to 3 | Band 3 entry, then after 2 years | £25,760 to £27,476 |
| Years 4 to 5 | Band 5 entry | £32,073 |
| Years 6 to 9 | Band 6 entry | £39,959 |
| Year 10 onwards | Band 7 entry, rising to £56,515 | £49,387 |
Pay awards usually lift each figure every year.
