Every NHS trust has a finance department that manages budgets worth hundreds of millions of pounds, pays suppliers, runs payroll, reports to regulators and supports clinical services to plan. Finance staff are paid on Agenda for Change, and many trusts fund professional accountancy qualifications for their staff.

Professional qualifications

Most NHS finance careers involve one of the main accountancy qualifications:

  • AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians), often for Band 3 to 5 roles
  • CIMA, popular in management accounting
  • ACCA or ICAEW/CIPFA routes for financial and public sector accounting

CIPFA, the public sector accountancy body, is particularly relevant to NHS and public sector finance.

Many trusts fund study through apprenticeships, which means no course fees for you and paid study time. Some link progression to passing exams, for example moving from Band 5 to Band 6 once part qualified.

Graduate entry: the Finance Graduate Management Training Scheme

The NHS runs a national graduate management training scheme with a finance stream. Graduates work in placements across organisations while studying for a professional qualification, with salary and study funded. It is competitive, but it is one of the best-known routes into senior NHS finance roles.

Professional subscriptions

Membership of an accountancy body relevant to your job is usually on HMRC's approved list, so you can claim tax relief on the fee. See our tax rebate guide.

NHS finance compared with private sector accountancy

Qualified accountants can often earn more in some private sector roles, particularly in large firms and financial services. The NHS offers:

  • a guaranteed pension with a 23.7% employer contribution
  • generous leave and sick pay
  • funded study and exam leave in many trusts
  • often more flexible and hybrid working than client-facing practice roles

The pay progression calculator shows how pay rises step by step within each band.

Common questions

Do I need a degree? No. Many NHS finance staff start at Band 2 or 3 and qualify through AAT and further study while working.

Is payroll part of finance? Often, yes, although some trusts share payroll services with other organisations.

Are finance roles hybrid? Many are, depending on the team and trust.

A finance career in numbers

A simplified example at 2026/27 rates, for someone who starts as a Band 4 senior finance assistant studying AAT, then moves to Band 5 and Band 6 as they progress through CIMA, and becomes a qualified Band 7 accountant after eight years:

YearsBand and stepSalary
Years 1 to 3Band 4 entry£28,392
Years 4 to 5Band 5 entry£32,073
Years 6 to 8Band 6 entry£39,959
Year 9 onwardsBand 7 entry, rising to £56,515£49,387

Many trusts give paid study leave for exams. Ask how much study time is included before you accept a post that comes with professional training.
